Journal: Part Tasking the Re Entry & Roll from Complicated to Complex Domain - Case Study Lab 3 - Session 4

 


The video documents a progressive coaching sequence for a re entry and roll skill intervention. The footage demonstrates systematic part tasking across contrasting environmental domains, directly referencing Cynefin framework classifications to build robust skill execution under increasing dynamic pressure.

Flat Water Foundation and Part Tasking Progression

The initial session takes place in a sheltered, low complexity environment. Here, the paddler can systematically work through isolated skill components to build confidence, control, and underwater composure:

  1. Standard Roll: Establishing baseline movement mechanics and recovery alignment in flat water.
  2. Two Second Pause: Introducing a mandatory two second pause underwater before initiating the sweep, testing composure and eliminating panic reactions.
  3. Non Set Up Roll: Initiating the capsize without pre placing the paddle, requiring the paddler to locate orientation and set up entirely while submerged.
  4. Open Cockpit Roll: Performing the roll without a spray deck attached, managing boat stability and water intake while maintaining body position.
  5. Open Cockpit Roll with Two Second Pause: Combining the open cockpit constraint with an underwater pause, reinforcing orientation and fluid control before committing to the hip snap.

Domain Progression and Environmental Constraints

Complicated Domain Re Entry and Roll

The session transitions to the full re entry and roll sequence in a controlled, sheltered setting is classified as the Complicated Domain. The paddler capsizes, fully exits the cockpit, re enters the inverted hull underwater, secures feet and hips in the keyholes, and executes a roll to upright.

Complex Domain Application

The final phase shifts directly into moving water in the Menai Strait, classified as the Complex Domain:

  1. Warm Up Roll in Complex Domain: Demonstrating initial adaptation and confidence in moving water by executing a standard roll within turbulent flow.
  2. Re Entry and Roll in Complex Domain: Executing the complete re entry and roll while drifting in fast moving tidal water. The paddler manages environmental turbulence, boat alignment, and underwater re entry, successfully rolling up into a stable paddling position.

This case study is designed to illustrate progressive part tasking as outlined in BCAB coaching methodologies. By breaking down the task into discrete environmental and task constraints, the coach can scaffold the learner progression from stable conditions to dynamic tidal environments.

The clear separation between the Complicated domain (predictable mechanics, sheltered water) and the Complex domain (unpredictable moving water, live tidal flow) hopefully provides strong evidence of environmental structuring, movement analysis, and adaptive skill development for performance coaching methodologies.
